Artist's Conversation  on the 18th May 2025 between Marion Brandis and Judy Stevans

More than 30 people enjoyed a a conversation between author Marion Brandis and Judy Stevens, Festival Director, Artists Open Houses, about Handmade Tiles. It is "a detailed guide to how tiles can be made and used most effectively, and how their full potential can be realised. She first explains how to get started with a specific project in mind. She then looks at different ways of decorating and making tiles, particularly focusing on the exciting possibilities of surface decoration using glazes and slips. She goes on to explore how to make tiles with relief work and three-dimensional forms, using modelling and moulds. Further chapters on tiles and print, installation, freeform tiling, the tile in context and working to commission complete this impressive guide".

Music Evening
May 16th  2025

Sofar Sounds hosted a music evening in Encounters Garden where the performing artists remained a mystery until just before the event.

It was an opportunity for 50 guests to see the 2025 exhibition and enjoy a relaxed musical evening. Another excellent way for Encounters to serve the community.

A Talk by Mette Maya - entitled My Ceramics -
was given in Encounters on the 4th May 2025

Mette's recent work has won the European Prize for Applied Arts Exhibition and she has recently had two pieces accepted in the Permanent Collection of American Museum of Ceramic Art. She writes: "I love the feel of clay and the immediate response of the material, which communicates at a sensory level. I believe the senses bypass logic and provide a direct route to our inner life. I work in a territory inhabited by fleeting moments… Clay transformation is an important way for me to interpret the world, to see what is truly there, to make sense. Clay is the vessel through which I navigate chaotic thoughts and unconnected impressions. My every action in clay refers back to a mental state and these gestures connect thought, hand and space. Each element investigates the other and creates a channel of communication".
